Todos los años ofrecemos talleres de creatividad carnavalesca. El año pasado comenzamos a producir mascaras de carnaval para vender. Estas mascaras están completamente hechas por l@s niñ@s y jóvenes integrantes de GEXPAYE. He aquí su proceso.

Every year we run weekly workshops in preparation for the carnaval. Last year we started  producing carnaval mask for sale. These masks are made completely, (the design and construction) by the children and youngsters of GEXPAYE. And here´s their process

Now that they have been painted and black-lined,  it is time to apply the finishing touch-varnish

Y para terminar las mascaras se preparan para ser usadas, se les pone la cinta elástica para que agarren atrás, se les ha doblado para flexibilizar el carton un poco, y se les han despegado los dientes para un efecto mas monstruoso.

Now it is ready to wear; the elastic band that holds it to the head  has been placed, the cardboard has been softened a bit, and the teeth have been separated so as to create a frightening effect.

Esa tarde al final del desfile venderiamos estas mascaras en el parque a un precio modico asi generando parte del dinero que necesitamos para hacer el carnaval 

That afternoon after the parade we would sell these masks at the park for a minimal fee, generating in this way of the funds we need to do the carnaval

Primer Calentamiento de los Javieleros- First Time out around the Neighborhood for Los Javieleros

Los artistas y carnavaleros Edwin Urbano y Jose Luis Marmolejos llevan mas de 10 años con el Colectivo 27 de Febrero Javieleros y Comelones trabajando el carnaval en la Javiela. Edwin les da talleres donde les habla del carnaval y les enseña a hacer mascaras en caretas en cartón con papier mache y a transformar ropa vieja en trajes de diablos o otros disfraces o personajes. Estos talleres se ejecutan cada sabado durante el mes de febrero en el Club 27 de Febrero de la Javiela. 

For over 10 years, the artists Edwin Urbano and Jose Luis Marmolejos have been giving workshops about costume and mask making using old clothes and cardboard and bringing the joy and festivities of the carnaval to La Javiela, their neighborhood. This year Edwin is conducting these workshops  every Saturday in the club where we work.

Aquí estamos la tarde del primer sabado de taller carnavalesco luego de haber modificado trajes y arreglado disfraces trayéndole alegría carnavalesca al barrio.

Here we are parading down the streets of La Javiela in this our first Saturday of carnaval festivities after having worked on and modified our costumes.

El Maestro Duluc y el musico Gioel Nos Dan un Taller de Percusion- Master Percussionist Duluc and Musician Gioel Give Us a Workshop

 La mañana después del concierto Duarte Rebelde en La Nave el 26 de Enero para celebrar los 200 años del natalicio de uno de los padres de la patria dominicana Juan Pablo Duarte, el maestro percusionista Duluc y Gioel nos visitaron en el club 27 de Febrero donde trabajamos y nos dieron un taller de percusión donde luego de una explicación y muestra llegamos a practicar los toques y terminamos con una pequeña improvisación.
The morning after the Duarte Rebelde in La Nave to celebrate the 200 birthday of Juan Pablo Duarte, one of our founding fathers, the master percussionist Duluc and the musician Gioel visited us at the Club 27 de Febrero where we work and gave us a workshop where after a breif explanation and modeling we got to practice playing the drums and ended up improvising a short piece.

Ya mas calmados llegan a practicar una combinación de diferente toques con un@ niñ@ o joven llevando un ritmo y el-la otr@ persona otro

After they had calmed down a bit, they get to practice a combination of rhythms, with one person playing one rhythm on one drum and the other person a different one on the other

Y terminamos con una improvisación que incluye no solo los palos sino maracas, palmadas y coro. Que lo disfruten. Gracias Duluc y Gioel por su tiempo y entrenamiento
We ended the workshop with an improvisation that included the palos (types of drums) but also maracas, clapping and chorus. Enjoy. Thank you Duluc and Gioel for your time and training.

GEXPAYE en el concierto Duarte Rebelde en La Nave- GEXPAYE at a Concert

Nosotr@s no podíamos dejar pasar esta oportunidad sin llevar a l@s chic@s de GEXPAYE a este concierto por las siguientes razones: 1. para nosotr@s el aprendizaje no pasa solo en el aula y consideramos las experiencias nuevas y los viajes muy importante para el desarrollo de la persona, 2. el concierto se dio en El Centro Cultural La Nave, el cual queda cerca de la Javiela donde trabajamos y la mayoría vivimos, 3. era un concierto de música fusión y de un contenido social, muy diferente al tipo de música que están acostumbrad@s a oír  mayormente reggeaton, dembow y bachata, 4. dos de las bandas venían de la capital y una estaba dirigida por el maestro de la fusión y de la música raíz  Duluc quien al otro día les daría un taller de percusión, por consiguiente participar del concierto le serviría de estimulo para el taller, y 5. las madres, padres y guardianes de l@s niñ@s miembros de GEXPAYE quienes les dieron permiso a asistir. Por eso después  de adquirir los permisos y coordinar para juntarnos en la casa de una de las madres que iría con nosotr@s, nos fuimos para La Nave, y gracias a la confianza de sus padres y guardianes, tod@s la pasamos muy bien  oyendo música, bailando, jugando, comiendo y compartiendo las festividades lo que aprendíamos como el trabajo de Duarte había sido rebelde en su época y entendíamos como ese trabajo de rebelión contra todo tipo de opresión debe continuar. Y así vamos aprendiendo y divirtiéndonos.

We couldn´t pass up this opportunity without taking the members of GEXPAYE to this concert for the following reasons: 1. for us learning doesn´t happen only in the classrooms and we consider new experiences and trips to be very important for a person´s development, 2. the concert was in  El Centro Cultural La Nave, which is near la Javiela where we work and most of us live, 3.they would  be listening to fusion bands with socially-conscious music, very different from the type of music they are accostumed to listening to (reggeaton, dembow and bachata), 4. two of the bands were coming from the capital and one of them was Duluc´s, a master of fusion and folklore, band,  who would be giving them a workshop on percussion so seeing him play would serve as a stimulus, motivating their interests. 5. and the mothers, fathers, and guardians of the members of GEXPAYE gave them permission to go. So after getting all the permission slips-vocal or otherwise- and coordinating a meeting place at one of the parents´house who was also coming to the concert, we set out to La Nave. Thanks to the trust the parents´placed on us and on their children, we were all able to enjoy a beautiful night of music, dancing, eating and sharing the festivities while learning about  Duarte (one of the founding fathers) and how at his time his actions were rebellious while actualizing it and showing how rebelling against any type of oppression needs to continue, thus learning and having fun at the same time.
