El Maestro Duluc y el musico Gioel Nos Dan un Taller de Percusion- Master Percussionist Duluc and Musician Gioel Give Us a Workshop

 La mañana después del concierto Duarte Rebelde en La Nave el 26 de Enero para celebrar los 200 años del natalicio de uno de los padres de la patria dominicana Juan Pablo Duarte, el maestro percusionista Duluc y Gioel nos visitaron en el club 27 de Febrero donde trabajamos y nos dieron un taller de percusión donde luego de una explicación y muestra llegamos a practicar los toques y terminamos con una pequeña improvisación.
The morning after the Duarte Rebelde in La Nave to celebrate the 200 birthday of Juan Pablo Duarte, one of our founding fathers, the master percussionist Duluc and the musician Gioel visited us at the Club 27 de Febrero where we work and gave us a workshop where after a breif explanation and modeling we got to practice playing the drums and ended up improvising a short piece.

After they had calmed down a bit, they get to practice a combination of rhythms, with one person playing one rhythm on one drum and the other person a different one on the other

GEXPAYE en el concierto Duarte Rebelde en La Nave- GEXPAYE at a Concert

Nosotr@s no podíamos dejar pasar esta oportunidad sin llevar a l@s chic@s de GEXPAYE a este concierto por las siguientes razones: 1. para nosotr@s el aprendizaje no pasa solo en el aula y consideramos las experiencias nuevas y los viajes muy importante para el desarrollo de la persona, 2. el concierto se dio en El Centro Cultural La Nave, el cual queda cerca de la Javiela donde trabajamos y la mayoría vivimos, 3. era un concierto de música fusión y de un contenido social, muy diferente al tipo de música que están acostumbrad@s a oír  mayormente reggeaton, dembow y bachata, 4. dos de las bandas venían de la capital y una estaba dirigida por el maestro de la fusión y de la música raíz  Duluc quien al otro día les daría un taller de percusión, por consiguiente participar del concierto le serviría de estimulo para el taller, y 5. las madres, padres y guardianes de l@s niñ@s miembros de GEXPAYE quienes les dieron permiso a asistir. Por eso después  de adquirir los permisos y coordinar para juntarnos en la casa de una de las madres que iría con nosotr@s, nos fuimos para La Nave, y gracias a la confianza de sus padres y guardianes, tod@s la pasamos muy bien  oyendo música, bailando, jugando, comiendo y compartiendo las festividades lo que aprendíamos como el trabajo de Duarte había sido rebelde en su época y entendíamos como ese trabajo de rebelión contra todo tipo de opresión debe continuar. Y así vamos aprendiendo y divirtiéndonos.

We couldn´t pass up this opportunity without taking the members of GEXPAYE to this concert for the following reasons: 1. for us learning doesn´t happen only in the classrooms and we consider new experiences and trips to be very important for a person´s development, 2. the concert was in  El Centro Cultural La Nave, which is near la Javiela where we work and most of us live, 3.they would  be listening to fusion bands with socially-conscious music, very different from the type of music they are accostumed to listening to (reggeaton, dembow and bachata), 4. two of the bands were coming from the capital and one of them was Duluc´s, a master of fusion and folklore, band,  who would be giving them a workshop on percussion so seeing him play would serve as a stimulus, motivating their interests. 5. and the mothers, fathers, and guardians of the members of GEXPAYE gave them permission to go. So after getting all the permission slips-vocal or otherwise- and coordinating a meeting place at one of the parents´house who was also coming to the concert, we set out to La Nave. Thanks to the trust the parents´placed on us and on their children, we were all able to enjoy a beautiful night of music, dancing, eating and sharing the festivities while learning about  Duarte (one of the founding fathers) and how at his time his actions were rebellious while actualizing it and showing how rebelling against any type of oppression needs to continue, thus learning and having fun at the same time.

GEXPAYE Fines de Semana Creativos y Recreativos-GEXPAYE Creative and Recreational Weekends

Sábados Creativos-Creative Saturdays 

Desde octubre 2012 nos hemos estado reuniendo sábados y domingos pues el club donde nos reunimos ya no esta disponible por las tardes. Los sábados hacemos trabajos artesanales para vender con los cuales sustentamos parte del proyecto. De esta manera combatimos la cultura del dame que nos debilita y aprendemos que unidos tenemos el poder de hacer y cambiar cosas. Muchas veces como los precios son muy solidarios pues creemos en la accesibilidad,  ell@s mismas se pueden comprar las piezas que hacen. De esta manera sustentan el proyecto con su trabajo y con su dinero el cual re-invertimos en su desarrollo.

Since October 2012 we have been meeting on Saturdays and Sundays because the club where we work is no longer available in the afternoons. On Saturdays we do arts and crafts which we sell to help sustain part of the proyect. In this way we also combat the culture of the hand-outs and the resulting inertia that consumes us and learn that united we have the power to make and change things. We believe in making things accessible to the people so our prices are often so affordable that they are able to buy the pieces they have made themselves. In this way they help sustain the proyect with their labor and their money which is then reinvested in their learning. 

En estos tiempos las pulseras de hilo como las que pueden ver en la foto del brazo están muy de moda por eso aprendimos a hacerlas gracias a donaciones del hilo hechas por nuestros amig@s colaboradores.

These days the bracelets shown in the picture above (the ones on the arm) are very popular so we learned to make them thanks to donations from our friends and supporters.

Domingos Recreativos-Recreational Sundays

Los domingos les ofrecemos un espacio recreativo a l@s niñ@s y jóvenes de la comunidad. Compartimos un mismo espacio el cual dentro de lo posible dividimos en áreas. Esta la área de arte, de arena, de rompecabezas, de construcción, de música,  de lectura, etc. En este espacio no solo nos recreamos, ejercitamos y socializamos sino que es un espacio donde estamos aprendiendo a comunicarnos efectiva y respetuosamente  y a expresar nuestras necesidades y frustraciones con palabras no con puños o llanto. Todo esto requiere control propio. Cuando perdemos ese control, perdemos el privilegio de participar de la recreación hasta que lo recuperemos y dentro de lo posible y de nuestras habilidades tomemos las medidas necesarias para emendar lo hecho. Y así poco a poco tod@s vamos desarrollando y disfrutando de un ambiente sano que nos nutre.

On Sundays we offer the children and youth of the community recreational activities. Since we share one big space, we divide it into areas. There are the art, sand, crossword puzzle, construction, music and reading areas, among others. However we don´t only offer recreation, exercise and socializing; in our space we are also learning to communicate respectfully and effectively and to express our needs and frustrations with words, not with fists or tears. All of this requires self-control. When we lose it, we lose the privilege of participating in the recreation until we regain it and do the best we can to take the necessary measures to fix whatever problem we have created. In this way, little by little, we are all developing and enjoying a space that supports our growth.

En el área de arte los mas pequeños trabajan coordinación manual (entrando los clavitos en los hoyos) y aprendiendo los nombres de los colores lo que los mas grandes  hacen dibujos tri-dimensionales con los clavitos

In the art area the little ones are using the pins to practice eye-hand coordination and to learn the colors while the older ones are making three-dimensional drawings using pins.

Tod@s l@s niñ@s y jovenes disfrutan de jugar con la arena. La cargan en los camiones, la mezclan con un poco de agua y la vuelven castillos y comida o la mezclan con piedritas para cubrir los hoyos en la carretera que construyen con la arena. Mucha creatividad y aprendizaje para tod@s.

All of the children and youth enjoy working with sand. They carry it in the trucks, mix it with a little water to make castles or cookies, or mix it with pebbles to fix the pothalls in the roads they create with the sand. A whole lot of learning and creativity for all.

Como podemos ver tanto las niñas como los niños disfrutan de jugar con la cuna. De esta manera, es decir permitiendo que tod@s juegen con todos los juegos, combatimos el sexismo que impide que los varones desarrollen sensibilidad y otras cualidades consideradas femeninas y que las hembras desarrollen fortaleza entre otras.

As we can see both girls and boys enjoy playing with the crib. In this way, that is allowing all members to play with all the toys, we combat the sexism that keeps boys from developing their sensitive side and other so-called femenine qualities. It is the same sexism that keeps girls from developing strength and endurence among others.

 

Usualmente l@s niñ@s y jovenes juegan con los instrumentos de música que tenemos y crean algunos alternativos rehusando la basura como lo son las maracas hechas de botellas plasticas con piedras pequeñas dentro. Pero en esta foto estamos  disfrutando de un taller improvisado de música dado con la llegada de nuestro querido amigo colaborador y miembro de la banda de fusion Concon Quemao,  Leonardo Herrera, mejor conocido como Dako.

Here we are enjoying an improvised music mini-workshop given by our friend and collaborator Leonardo Herrera, better known as Dako, a member of the Dominican fusion band ¨Concon Quemao¨ The bottles you see in their hands are the alternative maracas they have made using plastic bottles and peebles and sand.

Feria de Juguetes Vieja Belen- Christmas Toy Fair

Este diciembre les propusimos la Feria de Juguetes Vieja Belén a las oficinas gubernamentales como una alternativa a su usual donación de juguetes. En vez de creer y motivar el dar y la cultura del dame como lo hace la practica arriba mencionada, nosotr@s creemos en crear las condiciones necesarias para que las personas puedan tener acceso a lo que necesitan. En resumen este fue el objetivo de la propuesta  Feria Vieja Belén la cual pedía que nos donaran los juguetes a nosotr@s (GEXPAYE) para nosotr@s hacérselos accesibles a la comunidad a precios con un mínimo de 50% de descuento, haciendo así posible que el padre y la madre pudieran regalarles juguetes comprados por ell@s mismos a sus hijos sin tener que depender de la caridad de la gobernación. 

This December we met with members of City Hall and propused a new alternative to them. Every year they donate toys which are taken to the poor communities where adults literally fight for the toys. Instead of nourishing the inertia and give me culture that is consuming us, and since we believe in making things accessible to the people we proposed the Vieja Belen Toy Fair, which asked that they donate the toys to us, GEXPAYE, for us to sell it to the community members at super affordable prices with at least a 50% percent discount and more if necessary. The objective was to in this way make it possible for the parent or guardian to buy the King´s day present him or herself instead of having to depend on the charity of the government.

Aquí están algun@s de l@s miembr@s de GEXPAYE determinando y poniéndole los precios a cada juguete. Para hacer esto tuvimos que determinar el costo (lo que nos costo) y quitarle un 50% y si todavía resultaba muy cara entonces quitarle 10% o mas. Y así de una manera necesaria algun@s aprendimos algo de matemática.

Here GEXPAYE members are determining the price and marking each toy. In order to do this we had to determine the cost and take 50% off. If the price was still to high, we would then take another 10% off at least. In this way we benefitted from a real need to learn about math.

Y empieza la feria con los Zanqueros y la banda de percusión de la Nave. Les estamos muy agradecidos por su constante apoyo.

And the fair starts with the participation of the zanqueros and the percussion band from la Nave. We are very grateful for their constant support.

La Feria Vieja Belén fue todo un éxito pues los padres y guardianes pudieron comprarle reyes a sus hij@s, l@s niñ@s y jóvenes de la comunidad no solo recibieron los juguetes comprados por sus padres sino que hasta se compraron ell@s mismos juguetes pues habían hasta de RD$5.00,  GEXPAYE recaudo un poco mas de RD$2,200.00  con lo que compramos pintura para el trabajo de carnaval ahora en febrero, y una bola de béisbol, otra de voleibol y baterías que l@s miembros de GEXPAYE querían. Y ademas  tod@s disfrutamos de un ambiente festivo y de diversión sana, con música en radio y percusión en vivo, como también de juegos y pintadas de cara.

The Vieja Belen Fair was a total success. The parents or guardians were able to buy their children toys, the children and youth of the community not only recieved the toys their parents bought them but were also able to buy themselves toys since we were selling some at RD$5.00, while GEXPAYE made a little over RD$2,200 which is around $60 dollars with which we bought the paint we need for the carnaval, and bought a baseball a volleyball and the batteries the members of GEXPAYE wanted. What´s more we all enjoyed the festivities-the music and live percussion as well as the games and face painting.
